THE Chinese Olympic team are a gong strike away from making Uxbridge their base for the 2012 games.

Delegates from the Chinese Olympic committee have paid the town a secret visit to investigate the possibility of basing their team in Uxbridge for the London games or for a pre-games training camp.

The delegates were given a tour of Brunel University's top class athletics facilities, and the soon to be opened Olympic sized swimming pool at Uxbridge Lido.

The delegation of five was led by professor Tian Ye, president for the Chinese Institute of Sports Science, who was believed to be impressed with Brunel's sports science facilities.

Professor Ian Campbell, who is leading Brunel's 2012 programmes, said: "It has been very important for Brunel to host a delegation from the Chinese Olympic Committee. We are very encouraged by their enthusiasm to build a long-term partnership in the areas of pre-games training camps and sports science support services and we look forward to developing this relationship over the coming months."

Brunel University has a rocketing Chinese population, and there is an active 'Great Wall Society of Brunel' social club for students at the Brunel Chinese School.

China hosted the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing and topped the medal table, and have the largest team of all competing countries.

Last year the University was visited by Olympic gold medallist and world record holder Usain Bolt, who stayed at Parkwest in Porters Way, West Drayton, during his visit, and British Olympic sprinter Linford Christie also regularly coaches at the centre.

Jean Palmer, director of planning and community services at Hillingdon Council said: "Hillingdon Council was delighted to show some members of the Chinese Olympic Committee the brand new Hillingdon Sport and Leisure Complex. We are looking forward to the opening of the complex in March bringing the first Olympic-sized swimming pool to be built in London for around 40 years to Hillingdon residents.

"The pool includes state-of-the-art analysis equipment making it perfect for performance sports training and the ideal place for Hillingdon's swimmers to train and achieve sporting success"
