IT IS usually boats and not goats which are spotted in the canal, so one dog walker had the shock of her life when she saw a dead animal in there on Sunday.

Jay Burgin, 65, of Cowley Mill Road, Uxbridge, was walking her dog along by the Grand Union Canal near Culvert Lane on Sunday, when she spotted the animal.

Worried it might be somebody's pet, she attempted to rescue it, but was unable to, and phoned Hillingdon Council and asked them to remove it.

Mrs Burgin said: "It seems so sad, to see the body of a dead goat in a canal.

"If it was my pet I would like to know what happened to it, may be it got swept in there by flooding."

The goat was described as white and brown, fairly young and well built, with long brown ears.

The Lido Lap fundraising event in September saw walkers of all abilities trek around Ruislip Lido, in Reservoir Road, to raise £13,000 for soldiers injured in war.

Two security guards from Hillingdon Council, Lewis Baker and Dan Preston, came up with the idea for the event, which attracted more than 450 people. The remaining £2,000 came from public donations.

Today, a giant cheque was presented to Sergeant Steve Pickston, Middlesex county coordinator of Help For Heroes, by Councillor Ray Puddifoot, leader of Hillingdon Council, at Uxbridge War Memorial, on Mahjack's roundabout in Windsor Street.

DRIVERS are being warned of the dangers of alcohol over the Christmas period in an initiative to prevent road deaths.
