HILLINGDON'S first annual awards ceremony for its GP's took place last week to reward their contribution to the community.

The awards, voted for by staff and patients, were presided over by Mike Whitlam CBE, acting chair of NHS Hillingdon, and presented by MP John McDonnell.

Dr Derek Copland was the star of the evening winning two individual awards - 'GP of the Year: Patients' Choice' and 'Outstanding Contribution to Patient Care' - and also as part of the Belmont Medical Centre, in Belmont Road, Uxbridge, who won the 'Practice of the Year' award.

Dr Copland said: "I can only thank the patients tremendously, if it wasn't for the whole practice team and the PCT this wouldn't be possible."

Also honoured was Dr Sashi Shashikanth, of West London Medical Centre, in Harlington Road, Hillingdon, who was voted the "GP of the Year: GPs' Choice" award.

He said "I am delighted and feel humbled by the gesture from my GP colleagues for this award. I would like to thank NHS Hillingdon for holding such a lovely ceremony."

Dr Sarah Haring, who runs Northwood Health Centre in Acre Way, Northwood, was the winner of the Patients Choice award.

The awards were the first of their kind to be organised by Hillingdon PCT and were held at GlaxoSmithKline at Stockley Park.

We'd like to hear from you.
