Improvement works for Uxbridge High Street
THE town centre will turn into a building site this week- but it is all part of a masterplan to improve the High Street.
A facelift will be given to a large section of the town centre, in efforts to regenerate the area between the main entrance to The Pavilions and the pedestrian crossing in Belmont Road.
The plans are to open up the whole area and give it an altogether more open feel, and there will be potential for a continental style street culture.
The current layout leaves the High Street feeling cramped especially when the mini-funfair is in town.
The work begins this Thursday and shoppers and residents are being urged not to panic when they see the builders move in and trees being removed.
Mary Worrall, head of highways and green spaces, said: "We are committed to supporting businesses and residents in the town centre by making it an attractive place where people can live, work, visit and shop."
The £250,000 project is jointly funded by Hillingdon Council and Transport for London, and it is hoped the project will be completed by the new year.
Some of the suggestions for the works have come through the Uxbridge Initiative, with the main aim of the scheme being to improve the look of the town centre with more space for pedestrians and more places for people to sit down.
There will also be a larger open space, which would accommodate attractions such as the mini-funfair, and market stalls.
Andy Stubbs, Uxbridge town centre manager, said: "£50,000 funding from the development of flats on top of the Pavilions, £100,000 from TfL and another £100,000 from the council have all made this scheme happen.
"I welcome the improvements as it will provide a better walking environment for our visitors to the town centre and an improved look to the area."
The building works will be suspended between November and January, so to avoid causing disruption to frantic Christmas shoppers.
In September, a two month project will also commence to improve the pavement in Windsor Street.
