Cowley Mill Bridge closure continues to cause problems

Posted by Chris Longhurst on Feb 25, 09 09:04 AM in Local Authority

A TRAFFIC build-up as a result of the Swan Bridge closure is continuing to back traffic up in Uxbridge.

Two weeks ago the bridge on Cowley Mill Road closed for five months, meaning all traffic for the Uxbridge trading estate is diverted through Rockingham Road and St John's Road.

Last week was half term week so the traffic did not cause any major headaches, but this week it is crawling at a snail's pace.

Harvindr Ubhi owns the News Hut in Rockingham Road, overlooking the traffic, he said: "The traffic is all day for 12 hours from seven in the morning until seven in the evening.

"I don't understand why it takes five months to complete the bridge work, it is causing so many problems."

The closure of Swan bridge continues to be a problem, the traffic on Waterloo Road due to cars cutting through is causing a back up of traffic. Also exiting Waterloo Road onto Rockhingham Road is a nightmare and drivers are not assisting in anyway with the flow by allowing cars to exit. I also feel that people crossing Waterloo Road are also in danger due to the increase traffic and not always being able to see traffic coming around the corner. Temporary lights should have been put in place.

For better or worse Swan bridge reopened yesterday afternoon, well ahead of schedule. So well done to the contractors who certainly have made a lovely job of the new brickwork.

The predicted chaos elsewhere never really amounted to anything more than an inconvenience while Cowley Mill Road residents were treated to 3 months of relative peace.

It may be an opportune time to reflect that Cowley Mill Road is classified as a local distributor road and that the council's policies on maintainance of road hierachy state that it should take appropriate measures to discourage the use of such roads by through traffic. Unfortunately no such measures are apparent and this, together with illegal use of the bridge by overweight vehicles which will no doubt also be allowed to continue unchecked, will ensure that real traffic chaos returns to Cowley Mill Road soon.
